Barbara J. Phillips, 89, of Marathon, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY, surrounded by her loving family.
Barb was born in Waterloo, NY on July 7, 1936, the daughter of the late Harley and Emma Pease Niver. Barb lived a life marked by devotion, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to her family and community.
She was a cherished member of Lapeer Christian Church, where her faith and spirit touched many. Her presence brought comfort and joy to those around her, and she will be remembered for her warmth and generosity. Barb had previously worked at McGraw Box, Greek Peak, Gregg’s Big M and a home care provider.
She is survived by her daughter Deborah (Jim) Burk of Marathon and her son Steven (Darlene) Phillips, also of Marathon. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren Tanya (Lewis) Crosby, Leon (Heidi Rought) Burk, Charles “Chad” Phillips, and Jolene (Jordan) Betts, all residing in Marathon. She was further blessed with the joy of 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; three sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special family friend, Mary Rodriguez of Florida.
Barb’s family extended to her surviving siblings as well, including Charles Niver of McGraw, and Beverly Seamans of McGraw. Their shared memories and bonds remain a testament to the close-knit family she helped nurture.
In addition to her parents, Barb was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leon Phillips, who passed away in 2000, and by her brothers Clayton Niver, Donald Niver, Philip Niver, Robert Niver and Richard Niver. Their memories, alongside hers, are held dear by all who knew them.
Funeral services will be held at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY, on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Will Gallerani officiating. Burial will be in Marathon Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until the start of the service at 2:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in Barb’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
