Obituary

Donna H. (Hunt) Barrows, 85, of Marathon (Killawog), NY, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, October 31, 2026, while surrounded by her loving family.

Donna was born in Cortland, NY on July 15, 1941, the daughter of the late Donald and Wahnita Bensley Hunt. Donna built a life marked by dedication to her work, her community, and the organizations she served so faithfully. She retired from SUNY Cortland in 2003 after 21 years as an accounts clerk. Beyond her career, she gave generously of her time and energy in many ways. She was a member of the OES Marathon Chapter 101 and where she served as Past Matron. She was also Vice President of MAVAC since its inception, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a former secretary-treasurer of the Killawog Cemetery Association. Her steady commitment to these groups reflected a life of service and involvement that touched many.

At the heart of Donna’s life was her family. She is survived by her husband, Paul Barrows, with whom she shared 66 years of marriage. She also leaves her son, Donald (Melody) Barrows of Center Lisle, and her daughter, Denise (Stephen) Werner of Lima. Donna’s family continued to grow through the generations, and she was a beloved grandmother to Danielle (William) Moore of Center Lisle, Kenneth Barrows of Jacksonville, FL, Emily (Joe) Ford of Gates, and Eric (Holly) Werner of Greensboro, NC.

She is also survived by her cherished great-grandchildren: Madison, C.J., and Phoebe Moore; Dawsyn-Rea and Skyler Barrows; Maggie, Aubrey, and Lacey Werner; and Norah Ford. She is further survived by her brother, Harry (Katherine) Hunt of Marathon; her brother-in-law, Carl Barrows of Denton, TX; and her sister-in-law, Betty Moscrip of Whitney Point.

In addition to her parents, Donna was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Preston, and her sister-in-law, Joyce Butts.

Family and friends are invited to call from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY. An Order of the Eastern Star Remembrance Service will follow at 1:00, with a memorial service beginning at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Maryanne Taylor officiating. Private committal services will be held at the Killawog Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Donna’s memory may be made to MAVAC, P.O. Box 132, Marathon, NY 13803, the Killawog United Methodist Church, c/o Ruth Tillotson, 615 Jennings Creek Road, Marathon, NY 13803 or to the Wilmont Cancer Center, 90 Crittenden Boulevard, Rochester, NY 14642.
