Joan Patricia Fleming

Joan Patricia Fleming, 78, of Marathon, NY, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, NY.

Born in Cortland,  NY, on March 25, 1944, Joan was the daughter of the late James Bernard Fleming and Brigid Corr Fleming.  A lifelong resident of the area, she was 1962 graduate of Marathon Central School.  After high school graduation, she attended Geneseo College and SUNY Cortland where she received her Master’s Degree in Education.  She was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Marathon where she had served on the Parish Council and volunteered for the hospitality committee.  For 24 years, she taught first grade at Marathon Central School, retiring in 2006.  Prior to that, she had taught fourth grade at Whitney Point Central School.  She served as a trustee for both the Peck Memorial Library and the Marathon Area Historical Society where she volunteered during the Marathon Maple Festival.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Dan Matthews) Wainwright of Homer, Deborah (Gary) Nelson of Marietta, Christine (Dave) Brandstadt of Marathon, and Jennifer (Dan) Dubovik of Phoenix, NY.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Alexander Nelson, Zachary Brandstadt, Ryan Wainwright, Derek Januszka, Adam Brandstadt, Justin Wainwright, and Corinne Januszka; her siblings, Eileen (Bob) Haw of Maryland, Robert (Breda) Fleming of Marathon, and Stephen (Joan) Fleming of Colorado; sisters-in-law, Mary Fleming of California and Dorothy Fleming of Elmira; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Kathleen Terry, James Fleming, Joseph Fleming, Dorothy. Beattie, and David Fleming.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 17, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Marathon, NY.  Burial will be in Marathon Cemetery.  The family will be present to receive friends at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the Mass.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Joan may be directed to the Peck Memorial Library, P.O.
