Michael Jon Gerber, 71, of Marathon, NY, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, NY.
Michael was born in Cortland, NY, on June 18, 1947, the son of the late Carl and Mary Birdlebough Gerber. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of the Marathon Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and on Session. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by Schwan’s for 30 years. After retirement, he worked part time at Greek Peak and drove school bus for the Cincinnatus Central School. He was a member of Marathon Lodge #438 F & AM and a former member of the Marathon School Board. In his spare time, Michael enjoyed his passion for woodworking.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathy Collins Gerber; and his children, Regina (Donald) Morgan of Amite, LA, Matthew (Kelly) Gerber of White Hall, PA, Robert (Rochelle) Hulslander of Cobleskill, and Amy (Neal) Markwitz of Pavilion, NY. He also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, David and Gary Gerber of Killawog; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Susan (Mark) Waite of Raleigh, NC, Michael (Shelia) Collins of Whitney, TX, and Patrick (Maureen) Collins of Boulder, CO; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his best friend - his dog, Katie Sue.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Peter Gerber.
Michael will be missed by his many friends, including Jeff and Arla Hubbard, David and Sharon Canfield, Robert and Marlene Isherwood, Dixie Latimer and her late husband, William, and Kathy and Howard Dennison.
A memorial service for Michael will be held at the Marathon Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. with his pastor, Reverend Douglas Hatch officiating. The family will be present to receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. prior to the service where a Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 3:45 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Michael may be directed to Marathon Lodge #438 F& AM, 28 Main Street, Marathon, NY 13803; the Marathon Presbyterian Church, 3 E. Main Street, Marathon, NY 13803, the ASPCA, 879 McLean Road, Cortland, NY 13045, or to a charity of one’s choice.
